This is a friendship owl. Hazel educated me about these cute little guys on the way home from school today. When this nut is whole, you bury it in the ground. You are supposed to leave it buried for a week. While it's buried you are supposed to take care of a animal (any animal/insect is appropriate here). When you dig it back up it will be split in half so you can make a wish on it.
These nuts grow everywhere here, especially around the elementary school's playground. I saw the heart shape in the center. But Hazel sees the wish providing owl. It makes me smile to hear all the little legends the kids make up about everyday things.
After listening to my children, it would seem that there are lots more wish making opportunities than there were when I was a kid. I think we wished upon stars, birthday candles, and other regular stuff. My kids wish on eye lashes that fall on your cheeks, rainbows, and friendship owls.
Do your kids make wishes? Are there other things to wish on that I am in the dark about?

I only remember pulling petals off of daisies and blowing dandelions. Does that mean I had a stunted childhood?
I don't remember my kids wishing on things in nature - I do remember them loving "sourgrass" - which still grows in abundance around here.
