Hand Me Downs

I was looking for something in my cedar chest a couple months ago and found this dress my mom made for me when I was 8 years old. It was a German dirndl (a national costume). My grandpa was German and we did a lot of things growing up that were traditionally German. Grandpa loved to listen to German beer drinking music. We had sauerkraut at Thanksgiving. There were lots of German cuckoo clocks and various decor. Anyway, Mom also dressed us up in traditional German clothes.
This dress was something that I remember wearing often. Anyway, I figured that it would fit Hazel.

So I got it out a couple weeks ago and Hazel tried it on. She actually wore it to church last week. The dress was a little snug. I think I was a much smaller little girl. Still I thought it was fun to see her wear something that I wore when I was little.

*I have another dirndl that I wore when I was 11 or 12. I'll have to get that one out and see if Aspen will try it on for me.

I certainly have no clothes from my childhood, but I had some clothes I had made for Bonny and her two older girls wore them a time or two but like your dress on Hazel, they were smaller - funny how that is. But then Phoebe had a friend who wore the same dress her mother had worn to her middle school promotion. And it looked pretty cool. It's good we have photographs!

I love hand me downs! Agnes has worn a few of my old dresses. The Dirndl is pretty awesome. There is a little girl in our ward that wears one often- her grandparents brought it back from Germany for her.

You were actually 8 years old when I made that so you were much smaller than Hazel. It was really fun to make and I still have the pattern somewhere.
